One can bring naturalism to a ritual through the orientation of Allegoricalism, if one is evoking non-human forces. However, many rituals don’t involve supernaturalism at all, including singing, dancing, and the playing of music. It’s all about context and purpose.

Now then, in no way am I presenting myself as an expert or guru. I am a fellow traveler here, and I look forward to working with other Naturalists in coming up with naturalist-oriented rituals.

Thanks for the link…that looks like a very good essay.

Your own ritual is great for promoting gratitude, which is a fulfilling and healthy feeling.

By my phrase, I simply mean the articulation of non-human personalities, whether deistic, angelic, or animalistic. I sometimes do small rituals with the Hindu god Ganesha although I’m perfectly aware that he doesn’t exist outside of human imagination.

I find this chapter from the online version of the wonderful book "Secular Wholeness" inspiring:

http://www.tassos-oak.com/online/05ritual.html

It brings the subject down to earth and contains a lot of practical hints for constructing naturalist-oriented rituals.

At home we always pray before eating, thanking the powers of nature, the food, the one making our dinner and everyone else present. We find this an effective way of enjoying the meal and also reminds us to be thankful. Highly recommended for daily use!

'Evoking non-human forces' - could you please explain what you mean by this?

So how do you bring naturalism to ritual? Any example from you own life you would like to share with us?

I'm not sure that it makes sense to say doing ritual in a naturalist way. Naturalism is more of an orientation one brings to ritual. That said, I would love to see rituals that are explicitly naturalistic. In fact, I hope that Sacred River can help develop some.

I'm looking forward to writing more...thanks for your feedback. And yeah, CIBO is my little brainchild. I've been thinking for a number of years about fundamental virtues that might be applicable to a liberal religious path, and these are the four I came up with. I have a lot of commentary on each, and soon I'll start rambling about what I mean for each.
